The Joint Eighth and Ninth Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS) was held in Vienna from 20 to 31 March 2023.
CNS sets out the fundamental safety principles in order to ensure and maintain a high level of safety in nuclear power plants and the Eighth Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the CNS was not conducted due to pandemic.
The Joint Eighth and Ninth Review Meeting organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was attended by 91 Contracting Parties to the CNS from 176 IAEA Member States. In the first week of the meeting, which started with the opening speeches of IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and Dana Drábová, Head of the State Office for Nuclear Safety of the Czech Republic and President of the Review Meeting, National Presentations were made, summarizing the legal, regulatory, administrative and other necessary measures taken by the Contracting Parties to fulfil their obligations under the CNS.
President Dr. Zafer DEMİRCAN and the accompanying NDK delegation, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and Akkuyu Nuclear JSC delegations attended the Review Meeting on behalf of Türkiye, and our National Presentation was held on March 23, 2023, in which the measures taken by Türkiye regarding nuclear safety were demonstrated. After the National Presentation, the questions of the Contracting Parties to the CNS were answered. In the second week of the meeting, the Country Review Reports submitted to the IAEA Plenary Meeting were finalised with the contributions of the Contracting Parties. In addition to the aforementioned meetings, the Turkish CNS Delegation attended the dinner hosted by Ambassador Levent ELER, the Permanent Representative of Türkiye to the United Nations in Vienna.
