Public Announcement 05-09-2024
Upon notification that radiation was detected at certain points within a zinc oxide production facility operating in the Province of Karabük, personnel from the Nuclear Regulatory Authority promptly conducted on-site investigations.
Based on the radiation measurements performed, it was concluded that there is no radiation-related hazard to our citizens living in the surrounding area.
In the measurements, varying radiation dose rates above background level were detected in the raw material storage silos, as well as in certain vehicles, machinery, and equipment at the facility. However, these dose rates decreased to background radiation levels when measured a few meters away from the area where measurements were taken.
Except for the above-mentioned locations, no other areas within the facility were found to have radiation levels exceeding background level.
All measurements and findings have been shared with the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change, the Karabük Governorship, the Turkish Energy, Nuclear and Mineral Research Agency, and the company. The necessary measurement, analysis, and radioactive decontamination activities within the facility have been initiated in coordination with these authorities.
Furthermore, no deviations were observed by the Nuclear Regulatory Authority in the recent data from the Radiation Warning and Monitoring System Network (RADİSA), which continuously measures radiation dose rates throughout Türkiye, including stations located in Province of Karabük.
Consequently, there is no radiation hazard to the region and citizens living in these regions.
