The European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG)

International Organizations

The European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) is an independent, expert advisory group, created in July 2007 by a Commission Decision made in May 2007, initially established as the European High Level Group on Nuclear Safety and Waste Management, with the aim of developing a common approach at the European Union level to the safety of nuclear installations, the management of spent fuel and radioactive waste, and the financing of nuclear decommissioning activities, and subsequently renamed to the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group.

As an independent advisory body, ENSREG's primary objective is to promote and adopt the regulatory frameworks that continuously enhance nuclear safety and implement an appropriate safety policy in the operation of nuclear facilities. Within this framework, all Member States operating nuclear facilities are required to adhere to the international principles set out for nuclear safety and the safe management of radioactive waste and fuel safety set out in the Nuclear Safety Convention, the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and the Safety of Radioactive Waste Joint Convention.

In the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident in Japan, ENSREG agreed that all nuclear power plants in Europe should undergo stress tests, followed by peer reviews.

An initiative has been launched by the European Commission for the participation of neighboring countries in stress tests in addition to the Member States of the European Union. Türkiye follows the studies on this issue and supports the joint decisions taken.
