Safety Standards Commissions and Committees

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

One of the primary duties and responsibilities of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is to set international safety standards for nuclear, radiation, radioactive waste and transportation safety, and radiological emergencies. The IAEA produces documents at different levels within the scope of this responsibility. At the highest level is the IAEA Safety Fundamentals, which is supported by General Safety Requirements and Specific Safety Requirements documents. In addition, the details for meeting the requirements are covered in the Safety Guides.

The safety standards prepared by the IAEA are approved by the Safety Standards Committees and the Safety Standards Commission at the first draft stage, and the drafts prepared by international experts are opened to the views of the member states. Once the draft documents have been finalized following feedback from member states, they are resubmitted to the relevant committees and the Commission for approval. Additionally, the Safety Standards Commission holds the responsibility of guiding these drafts and providing advice to the IAEA Director General on programmes related to the regulatory aspects of safety.

Safety committees are defined in five areas: Emergency Preparedness and Response Standards Committee (EPReSC), Nuclear Safety Standards Committee (NUSSC), Radiation Safety Standards Committee (RASSC), Transport Safety Standards Committee (TRANSSC), and Waste Safety Standards Committee (WASSC). Memberships to these committees are open to all member countries, and Republic of Türkiye is actively represented in all committees by Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Republic of Türkiye (NDK) experts.
