About
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
Established on July 29, 1957, under the United Nations, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an independent science and technology-based organization for international nuclear cooperation. Türkiye became a member of the Agency in 1957, becoming one of the first nations to ratify the IAEA statute.
Aiming to harness nuclear technology for the welfare of humanity and for the expansion of potential peaceful uses to support the development of countries, the IAEA assists Member States in the use of nuclear science and technology for various peaceful purposes with respect to social and economic objectives. The Agency also facilitates the sustainable dissemination of such technology and expertise to developing Member States. In this context, the primary areas of focus for the IAEA include “nuclear technology and applications,” “nuclear safety and security,” and “nuclear safeguards and verification.”
The IAEA verifies Member States' compliance with their commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and other non-proliferation treaties.
Additionally, the Agency ensures that Member States benefit from the applications of nuclear science and technology in industry, agriculture, water resources, the environment, and human health.
Headquartered in Vienna, the IAEA has 178-member states as of September 2023.
