The environmental remediation activities carried out at a site located in Gaziemir District, İzmir Province, which had been identified as radioactively contaminated, have been completed under the authorization granted by the Nuclear Regulatory Board's Decision No. 2023-15/4 dated 8 March 2023.
Pursuant to Article 9(8) of Nuclear Regulation Law No. 7381 dated 5 March 2022, the remediation activities at the site were carried out under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and under the regulatory control of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NDK). The radioactive waste generated during these activities was managed by the Turkish Energy, Nuclear and Mineral Research Agency (TENMAK). The management of non-radioactive waste at the site, as well as activities related to chemical contamination of the soil, was undertaken by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change.
Following the completion of the environmental remediation activities aimed at removing radioactive contamination, the final reports, radiological characterization and dose assessments, measurement and analysis results submitted as part of the application to NDK, together with the findings of inspections and on-site examinations conducted by NDK, were reviewed and evaluated. Based on these assessments, it was determined that the radioactive contamination at the site had been remediated. Accordingly, by Decision No. 2026-45/1 dated 22 October 2026, the Nuclear Regulatory Board decided to release the site from regulatory control.
Respectfully announced to the public.
